About

Pocket-sized consulting
with a Yukon-sized bite.

Outfox is a consulting practice built on one conviction: that the organizations doing the most important work deserve the sharpest tools and the most reliable intelligence.

Laurence Fox

Laurence Fox (They/Them) is a long-time environment and social justice reporter, activist, and author with over 15 years of Northern experience. They reported extensively on Northern-centric issues such as housing, wealth disparity, and sustainability, with a strong focus on the environmental, social, and cultural impacts of mining. In 2022, they began to focus more on activism and conservation, and in 2023 took a position as Conservation Coordinator with CPAWS Yukon, where they currently work as the organization's lead on protecting the Arctic Refuge and the Porcupine caribou herd, Yukon River salmon restoration, and political and legislative analysis. They specialize in community-based, trauma-informed research, interviewing, and analysis founded equally on compassion, consent, and science.

In the course of this work, Laurence was struck by how important, impactful, and meaningful the work of place-based environmental and social justice NGOs, activists, and First Nations is — and how brutally underfunded and overcapacity many of these organizations are. So many organizations are trying to do good, meaningful work for their communities on unstable, grant-dependent budgets with staff putting their whole selves into their jobs for a fraction of what government or industry pays, racking up overtime hours and struggling not to burn out. Governments and industry groups have money, staff, and influence, and the people and organizations trying to hold them accountable and enact a better world for everyone are often outmatched and overpowered everywhere but where it counts — heart, vision, and compassion. At the same time, in the course of their day-to-day work, Laurence was getting requests for their unique combination of place-based media, writing, and analysis skills that fell outside of what they were able to do as a CPAWS staff member, and so in 2024 they founded Outfox to specifically address the gaps they were seeing in their community and better support Northern environmental defenders and social justice advocates.

A professional writer, editor, and investigative reporter with a passion for science, the environment, and punching up — never down — Laurence has called the Yukon home for 15 years. They've also lived and worked in Northern BC, Alberta, the NWT, Vancouver Island, and Haida Gwaii, and have been privileged to have worked with Dene, Tlingit, Gwich'in, and Tutchone communities over the course of their career. Laurence is a proud member of the queer and trans community, identities which, along with their lived experience with rural poverty and homelessness, strongly inform their values, approach, and work.

When they aren't writing, researching, or designing information systems, Laurence can be found hiking, fishing, or just meandering around town with their fluffy red poodle, Audrey. You can find out more about Laurence's writing and other work here.
